The Symposium

August 15th, 1999 from 12 to 18 hrs. public presentation of the results of the theoretical  work

Parallel to the work-forum and the preparation of the final performance an international symposium will take place.  In table talks, discussions and lectures there will be a theoretical exchange of ideas on Butoh in general and a special reflection on the influence of Butoh on the performing arts in Europe in particular.
Focus of discussions and questions to think about:

1. the history of Butoh in Japan, it's European roots and the European adaptation of this quite new Japanese form of artistic expression. In this context it is important not only to look at the traditional "white Butoh" but more to reflect on new and parallel developments, and also other dance styles with an approach to Butoh.

2. how can the expression of inner conditions, which in Japan is called "Butoh", be described for our western world?

3. which energy pushes the artists to express themselves (even at any condition)?  What is going to express through the artists and why?  Which connection is between art, religion and spirituality?

4. the realisation in the form of performance and the collaboration between Japanese and Western artists with the creative work for the Ex... it!'99 final performance as an example.

5. Ex... it! '99 as an artistic approach to a new way of thinking to overthrow the deep identity crises in which we find ourselves at the end of the 2nd millennium and as an analysis of the context with the zeitgeist.

For that we have special invited:

Akiko Tachiki (dancecritic)
Gilles Kennedy (dancecritic)
Maria Pia D'Oraz (theaterscience)
Rolf Elberfeld (philosopher)
Gregor Weber (moderation)
